STANDING

IN SOLIDARITY

TRIBUTE CONCEPTUALIZATION &

COLLATERAL DESIGN

2019

Standing In Solidarity (Full Color).jpg

Having often visited New Zealand, the recent tragedy in Christchurch left me shocked and deeply saddened. The horrific incident highlights the importance and fragility of intra-faith harmony. If this can happen in a peaceful country like New Zealand, it can happen anywhere, especially in a multi-religious country like Singapore.

The emblem is my personal tribute, to express my sincere condolences for the bereaved and all who are grieved by this reprehensible incident. I hope to convey a message of unity that transcends languages and cultures -- to stand in solidarity regardless of faith; and to never allow such acts of senseless violence, intolerance and bigotry divide us.

The silver fern has been widely accepted as an unofficial symbol of New Zealand's national identity since the 1880s. The rows of men, standing in solidarity, are depicted as a silhouette deep in prayer and thought. They represent every one of us affected by the horrific incident, sombre & solemn. A row of men lies before them, seemingly their shadows, but also representative of the fallen victims. Both rows are connected at their soles (souls), with the same stem connecting all and forming the Silver Fern, the embodiment of unity, strength and resilience of New Zealand.

When words do not suffice, I hope my visual will narrate, and its message, resonate to foster compassion, understanding and tolerance in our diverse society.

REMEMBERING

LEE KUAN YEW

EVENT CONCEPTUALIZATION &

COLLATERAL DESIGN

2015

Lee Kuan Yew, the founding Prime Minister of Singapore and former leader of the People's Action Party, passed away at the age of 91 on 23 March 2015, after being hospitalised with severe pneumonia on 5 February 2015. Lee's son, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, declared a weeklong period of national mourning from 23 to 29 March 2015.

As a personal tribute to Singapore's founding father, and also the man who contributed immensely to the Singapore Airlines that it is today, I have designed a commemorative ribbon that features the distinctive kebaya motif of the famed Singapore Girl's kebaya uniform; juxtaposed with a simple black ribbon that signifies the solemn and sombre passing of the great man. A timeless serif white font of 'Remembering Lee Kuan Yew' finishes off the design with a polished elegance that brings forth the dignified overall look and feel of the piece.

The design is available both in a square format meant for display pictures in social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram etc and also in a landscape format. The design went viral, with thousands of likes on various social media platforms, as well as being shared hundreds of times through various platforms. The design was also eventually adopted by Singapore Airlines and used on its official corporate Facebook page as its cover image for the period of National Mourning, gathering many positive review by members of the public as well as staff and employees of Singapore Airlines.

STRENGTH IN UNITY

EVENT CONCEPTUALIZATION &

COLLATERAL DESIGN

2014

2014 marks the year of the twin tragedies that struck Malaysia Airlines; with the missing of flight MH370 and the downing of flight MH17. The project entitled 'Strength in Unity' was then conceptualized and executed to show solidarity and emotional support for both the crew of Malaysia Airlines, as well as raise funds for the bereaved families and friends of the affected crew on both MH17 and MH370.

A cohesive collection of Visual Communications collaterals is conceptualized and designed to showcase the unique combined heritage and history of both Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines. The kebaya motifs of both airlines are shown interweaved on a single ribbon, as a sign of remembrance of the affected crew; as well as to symbolize the unique history of both airlines that originated from the same roots - Malaysia-Singapore Airways (MSA). The Singapore Airlines kebaya motif is depicted behind the Malaysian Airlines kebaya motif, to symbolise how Singapore Airlines is behind Malaysia Airlines, supporting them.

A display was then set up for Singapore Airlines crew members to pen words of solidarity and support for their Malaysian Airlines counterparts on 2 colored ribbons that signify both airlines; and subsequently tie them to 'pillars of support'. The ribbons were then consolidated and made into artworks that were handed over to Malaysia Airlines, along with a donation for the bereaved families.

Since then, it is always present at all formal State or SAF functions, parades and ceremonies such as National Day and SAF Day, where head of states or foreign dignitaries are present, as a symbolic representation of the Singapore Armed Forced Band.

SAF BMTC MOHAWK COMPANY CORPORATE IDENTITY DESIGN

2004

Being appointed as the designer for the Singapore Armed Forces Basic Military Training Centre's Mohawk Company, a logo was designed to project a contemporary, minimalistic and professional image of the Company. A simple golden feather symbolises the strong fighting spirit of the Red Indians Mohawk warriors. The choice of the accompanying sans serif typeface also gives it a timeless, classy appeal.

The copy "A Legacy of Excellence" was conceptualised to highlight the proud history of outstanding achievements of the Mohawk Company.
